NUTRITIONAL SUPPLEMENTS
• To correct possible nutritional deficiencies, take a good multivitamin and mineral supplement daily. Be sure to choose a formula that contains the major antioxidant nutrients, including vitamins A, C, and E; bioflavonoids; and zinc.
• Vitamin-B3 (niacin) therapy can lessen cravings considerably while you are trying to quit. Relatively high doses are needed however, in the range of 250 to 500 milligrams three times a day, which can cause adverse reactions in some people. It is best to undertake this treatment under the supervision of a nutritionally oriented physician.
Note: Do not take supplemental niacin if you have gout or liver dysfunction.
• Smoking depletes the body’s supply of vitamin C. This vitamin can also help to both detoxify and relax someone withdrawing from nicotine. Take 1,000 milligrams of vitamin C three times daily. Choose a magnesium ascorbate formula if possible.
• Vitamin E is an excellent antioxidant that protects against damage from the free radicals generated by smoking. If you are still smoking, take 400 international units of vitamin E daily. Choose the mixed tocopherol or d-alphatocopherol form, not dl-alpha-tocopherol. Also take 100 micrograms of selenium daily to support the action of vitamin E.
Note: If you are taking an anticoagulant (blood thinner), consult your physician before taking supplemental vitamin E.
PREVENTION
• Nicotine addiction is entirely preventable-all you have to do is not start smoking. Once you take that first cigarette, however, the only way to prevent nicotine addiction is not to take the next.
