Chelating therapy is a technique which uses chelating agents like EDTA
(ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid) for removing heavy metals like mercury and lead and also for removing calcium deposits from arteries known as atherosclerosis. EDTA usually binds with heavy metals and removes them from the body mostly through urine as it is water soluble. Chelation can be done in clinics intravenously or orally through home. In oral chelation therapy a chelating agent is taken orally daily.
Oral chelation is gaining popularity because it is a relatively inexpensive and prevents patients from undergoing certain expensive medical procedures. There are various chelation products available in the market for daily intake like cardio Restore, Orachel, Bio-Chelat, and ChelatoRx. Studies have shown that only 5%-18% of the EDTA from these products is absorbed by our body therefore along with EDTA many other chelating agents are also there in these products. Many clinical trials have proven the fact that excretion of heavy metals like lead and mercury in urine increases after intake of EDTA orally.
Though Intravenous EDTA therapy is relatively more effective oral one is preferred as it is inexpensive. Many researchers and doctors believe that taking EDTA can increase one’s life span upto 15 years. Thus is should be pointed out that though many people believe chelation is harmful as it increases absorption of some metals but it also has many benefits associated with it.
